Menu for my granny..caring for the elderly

If you have elderly parents or an elderly grandma (like mine) who is now 88, the hardest part is to make her have the appetite to eat. I dont blame them.  Well.. food lovers like us can turn picky eaters when we get to older age. Could be worst.. I am thankful, alhamdullillah, she is staying with my brother that she receives the proper care needed. 


Our Worries
The first iftar with her on the first week of Ramadhan, she could actually sat next to me and ate the assam pedas, cucur udang etc. she was just  fine. I sat with her, together at the sofa reciting 3 Qul and Ayatul Qursi. I asked her and reminded her of the names of all important people in her life. Looking at her weak condition, we almost cancelled our plan to have Iftar together at her house. All of us decided to have the iftar at Bkt Jelutong instead as Uwan was too weak to move. 



I am not a medical doctor. But I could sense something is not right. Uwan was struggling with words and could no longer munch properly and not even able to sip drinks through straw. I The iftar went on. We had jamaah prayer with all my siblings and cousins. 


Visit to DEMC
The visit to the doctor today, she went through thorough check up. the city scan showed a minor internal bleeding on the right brain as the latest occurrence of stroke. The stroke she had few years back, was on the left. That explained her slurring speech for the last few weeks and her lack appetite to eat.


Such a relief to hear, Dr Rahman shared the tests results. All is fine. Sugar level, heart, kidney, BP all ok. She is alert - He said. She reacted well. All she needs is more energy. She needs to get good proper protein to gain some weight. help her move as exercise to loosen her muscles. 
She has been malnourished for many years. Thin and seriously underweight, she has no energy and would rather sleep.


Our Response
Yes, we have to be creative in providing the variety of food for her.   
She needs to eat more regularly. Small portions but more often.
No diet for her.. all she can eat.


Basic Nutrition
1. Protein milk  with high calories high protein (ensure, nutron, Conplant, Weight Gain, etc)
2. Vitamin B & D - Scott emulsion to get her appetite to eat


Food to prepare for elderly


1. Bubur (blended porridge) - no MSG sliced onions with
- daun sup, daun bawang & bawang goreng
- shrimps, beef, chicken, fish
- soup or asam rebus, bening
- ikan bilis - (goreng tanpa minyak & blend)
- Vegies: carrots, cauliflower, brocolli, spinach(bayam)
- any dish - ayam masak kicap, ikan taucho, asam rebus - blend in with the porridge


2. Mash potatoes
boiled potatoes, blend with fresh milk & butter


3. Mushroom Soup


4. Taufufah 


5. Milo & cream cracker or biskut pulau pinang (teringat dalam pantang)


6. kopi celup bahulu ( Tea time Petang hari es bila hujan)


7. soya bean


8. Bubur sum sum (ehmm..)


9. mashed banana - pisang rebus berkelapa...( sedap ni)
